Why should you seek counseling?

The authors of The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook state that we experience stress from four basic sources:

  • environmental stress (inclement weather, noise or pollution)
  • social stresses (job demands, interpersonal conflicts, financial concerns and grief)
  • physiological stress (sleep problems, illness and poor nutrition)
  • cognitive stress (irrational thoughts)

Many individuals seek counseling for help in managing their stress. High levels of stress often lead to becoming overwhelmed and even being unable to function efficiently. Pervasive stress is also linked to many medical problems such as diabetes, heart disease and gastrointestinal problems.

Counseling helps individuals balance their stress and its impact on their lives. I will personalize a plan for you to meet your specific needs. Part of this process will involve discussing any physical concerns relating to stress, providing support during your challenging times and enlisting outside resources as needed to help. Other techniques that I use include exposure to mindfulness and relaxation techniques, which helps you focus on what you can control, to keep yourself in the present and not the past.
