I received a Master’s in Social Work 39 years ago. Later, I became a Licensed Independent Social Worker and a Licensed Marriage Family Therapist and have been in private practice since 1985. I often think of a friend named Kaye Sharpe, who was a founding member of the S.C. Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. She kept a sign in her office which said “Alterations”. A woman had rang her doorbell once looking for someone to alter her clothes only to find out Kaye specialized in alterations of people instead. She was in the business of helping people alter or modify their relationships. For many years, I was lucky enough to have her as was my mentor. Many of the people who come see me in counseling want to make changes or alterations but change can feel daunting or scary. My approach is to listen as people talk about what is not working in their lives, help them to imagine how they want things to be instead and coach them into achieving their goal.
